When to See an Emergency Dentist

A dental emergency is any problem that needs prompt care to relieve severe pain, stop bleeding, or save a tooth.
If you have any of the following, call us as soon as possible at (416) 858-4949.

If your emergency involves wisdom tooth pain or a possible extraction, see our tooth extraction and wisdom tooth removal page.

Severe or throbbing tooth pain

Pain that keeps you awake, worsens with pressure, or doesn’t ease with over-the-counter painkillers.

Swelling in the face or gums

Facial swelling can signal infection. Swelling that affects breathing or swallowing is a medical emergency, go to a hospital.

Broken, chipped, or cracked tooth

Especially with pain, a sharp edge cutting your tongue, or visible nerve exposure.

Knocked-out tooth

A knocked-out adult tooth is time-sensitive, the best chance of saving it is within 30–60 minutes.

Lost filling or crown

An exposed tooth can be sensitive and is at risk of further damage until it’s repaired.

Wisdom tooth pain

Pain, swelling, or difficulty opening your jaw at the back of the mouth often points to a wisdom tooth problem.

When to go to a hospital instead: If you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, or facial swelling spreading toward the eye or neck, go to the nearest hospital emergency room or call 911. These can be life-threatening and need immediate medical care.

Before you get here

What to Do Before You Reach the Clinic

These steps can reduce pain and improve outcomes while you’re on your way. They don’t replace seeing a dentist,
call us first. (416) 858-4949.

Knocked-out tooth

1. Pick the tooth up by the crown (the white part), not the root.
2. If dirty, rinse gently with milk or saline, do not scrub or remove attached tissue.
3. Try to reinsert it into the socket and bite gently on a clean cloth.
4. If you can’t reinsert it, keep it in milk (or inside the cheek) and come in immediately.

Severe toothache

1. Rinse with warm salt water to clean the area.
2. Gently floss to remove any trapped food.
3. Take over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the label.
4. Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek, do not place painkillers directly on the gum.

Broken or chipped tooth

1. Rinse your mouth with warm water.
2. Save any broken pieces in milk or saline if possible.
3. Use a cold compress to limit swelling.
4. Cover a sharp edge with dental wax or sugar-free gum to protect your tongue.

Lost filling or crown

Keep the crown if you have it and bring it with you. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can protect the tooth short-term. Avoid chewing on that side until it’s repaired.

Cost and Insurance for Emergency Visits

What an emergency visit costs

An emergency dental visit in Toronto usually starts with an emergency exam, and X-rays if needed, to diagnose the problem. Treatment cost depends on what’s required.

The main factors that affect cost are:

The type of treatment needed (e.g. a filling vs. an extraction)
Whether X-rays or other diagnostics are required
The complexity and number of teeth involved
Whether follow-up care is needed

We explain the cost before starting any treatment, so there are no surprises.

Using your insurance

We can submit claims directly to many insurance providers where available. Coverage depends on your plan, eligibility, deductibles, annual limits, and insurer rules. Patients are responsible for any balance not covered.

Direct billing to major insurers including Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life, and Green Shield
CDCP may help eligible patients pay for certain dental services. Coverage, co-payments, preauthorization, and treatment eligibility depend on CDCP rules and your situation.
We can help UofT and TMU students check student insurance details. Coverage depends on active enrollment, plan rules, deductibles, annual maximums, and coordination of benefits.
We offer LendCare and other flexible installment financing options for larger treatments.
